Wireless or Water?

I'm on my annual trip to Ukraine and I'm amazed at the amount of change there has been in a year. Last year the majority of cars were still old Ladas and Volgas. Although there are many of these 1960s and 1970s vehicles on the road there has been a huge influx of imported German, Japanese and even a couple of Hummers from the US.

One of the strangest differences from last year is the way technology has developed. I am still unable to drink water from the taps but am typing sitting on a bed in my friend's apartment connected to his wireless that runs quicker than our broadband at home!

This is certainly convenient and useful for communicating but seems slightly wrong in a country rife with alcoholism, drug abuse, HIV and children without parents.

I'm in Ukraine with the EachOfUs School I lead. If you want more information or would like to pray for the team check out www.eachofusprayer.blogspot.com or email me. I'll post some pictures when I can.

Environmentally Friendly at 200mph

I was reading the Guardian online today when I came across this article. As a kid I really loved watching Formula 1 races on a Sunday afternoon but have not followed the 'sport' for a good ten years mainly because the cars seem to follow each other around until Schumacher has a pit stop a second quicker than the other drivers and end up winning. Additionally Formula 1 has been funded by tobacco firms and oligarchs thus not appealing to the more virtuous side of my nature.

However it appears a revolution could be underway. I am writing from a place of some ignorance so please correct me if you know better but tobacco sponsorship has been banned and many of the teams are investigating using Formula 1 as a test ground for more environmentally friendly fuel.

Now one of the major teams is rejecting the conventional sponsorship route to encourage members of the public to make environmental pledges in return for seeing their name pixellated on the car's livery. Check out www.myearthdream.com to see the idea develop.

Back for 2007

BELATED HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Apologies for not checking in here recently. We've had a pretty rough time of it recently and are still in the midst of that but I'm trying to keep a positive outlook on life. So...the fact that I came home to find our fence has blown down obviously means that we can get to know our neighbours better and the fact that our house is seriously cold right now means I can try out some old jumpers!

On the other hand we've just bought a rug to warm up our living room, we've got a guy coming round tomorrow because we're going to need a boiler and I get to spend several hours outside fitting fence posts and panels.

So...just to rise above the consumer/capitalist tide the festive season I thought we'd start the new year with sharing ingenious money saving tip! So that we can hold our heads up and approach our consciences without a great deal of fear and trepidation I'd particularly love to hear some genuine ethical and environmentally friendly ideas.

To get us started I'll share a really helpful email that we receive called Martin's Money Tips (www.moneysavingexpert.com to sign up) and a website our good friends Sam and Hannah recommended to us recently - www.hotukdeals.com. Not much good to our North American friends but please share your own.

Inspiring Video

Hey guys,

Sorry for the blog silence recently. Life is good but busy. I love it when I see or experience things which remind me what this whole life adventure is all about. We saw this video on our friend Dan's blog a few months ago and received it as a link in an email. If you haven't seen it then watch it - if you have then watch it again!
